How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper
by Barbara Gastel and Robert A. Day

You usually can tell by edition of a book its popularity. This book is into its eighth edition. This book a valuable resource to refer for snippets of advise while preparing an academic work. It is user-friendly, non-threatening with comics and a sense of humor infused in its text, and easy to read and refer to. It is  broken up into relevant topics. For example, how to write each part of a journal article - the introduction, methods, results, analysis and discussion (what is known as IMRAD). More than that it covers every aspect of being a graduate student and academic. For example there's a chapter on How to Write for the Public (Chapter 25) and and How to Write a Thesis (Chapter 26).

Writing for Social Scientists
by Howard S. Becker

This is more a theoretical book than a "how to" book and because of that it gives you a different view of academic writing. It makes you think more about the how and why, instead of just teaching you how to do it.

Howie is a very well-published and established social scientists and he takes time to explain the craft of writing in this book from a social scientists perspective.

I once selected this book as an assignment to teach writing to my graduate class. Here are my slides:

The Writing Workshop
by Barbara Sarnecka

This is a newly published book (2020) that I have yet to read but it seems like the author encourages writing groups. So this might appeal to you if you are thinking of forming a community of writers to support one another in their endeavor!

Writers Resource Kit
by The Book Council, Singapore

This is a book on writing. It is from a Singapore context. It is not an academic writing book but as I have said in my book - any book that teaches you to write is good for teaching you academic writing. It is very easy and enjoyable to read.
