The Graduate Student as Writer
"Truly a pleasure reading this book. It is concise and informative at the same time, it also helps a lot to know that you are not alone through the journey as the author reminds you of this. Thank you." - Loladc16, Argentina
I worked for 10 years as a research assistant and associate at a university in Singapore while I pursued my Masters. During the time, I wrote and published many journal articles and saw myself primarily as a writer. However, I noticed this was not the case for many other students.
The idea of this book came about after many graduate students approached me to ask if I had any advice on writing and publishing. Rather than have to keep repeating my advice, I thought to myself, perhaps I could compile them into a book, so that I can share that content more easily.
In this book, I will share my personal journey of overcoming the fear of writing and publishing through a four-step process of drafting, receiving feedback, rewriting, and copyediting:

This book is special because it addresses more than how to develop your writing skills but it provides encouragement to overcome some of the resistance many of us have about writing. Over the years, I realised that there is a strong psychological component to writing and many struggle not because they cannot write but because of the misconceptions they hold about writing and themselves as writers.
This book is easy to read to read and can be completed in an hour and half. In this book, not only will you find time and tested methods that have worked for all writers, you will also find unexpected byways onto the path of writing and publishing. But most importantly, you will surely find hope and refreshment for this long and sometimes dreary journey.

"No fluff, no unwanted verbiage. She gets right to the point.
Her writing style is clear, direct, and immediately helpful. It is as if she is speaking directly to you.
In a very down to earth way, Shuyi provides you with an easy solution to this mantra:
'Many people do not think that they can write. However, if you can think it, you can write it.'"

"Shuyi's book is short, but it contains all the essential elements of why and how of writing. It has just the right amount of information for getting started, and an appropriate collection of references for diving deeper into specific aspects of writing craft.
I like the simple conversational style of the book, and Shuyi's use of her personal stories to highlight both academic specific and general writing concerns. Had I come across something like this 20 years ago, my career path would have been different."

"This book is wonderful! It takes you step-by-step through the process of publishing as a graduate student. Even if you may not be a graduate student, it is full of tips about how to organise your writing and improve your capacity to write clearly and effectively. It is a nice mix of practical tips and inspirational advice. It feels like speaking to a wise friend! Highly recommend."

"I enjoyed the book as it was not only a quick read but had some thoughtful recommendations on ways to improve writing and ways to alter your thinking to make the journey of becoming a scholar enjoyable, realistic and fruitful. I do think there are some things that may be less relevant for other disciplines, for example, being that my field of study is Sport Science, I find it hard to implement some of the things about "personalizing" academic writing that were in the book, I do think the idea behind making writing more "fun" or "enjoyable" is important as writing doesn't need to be dull and for literature to evolve we need to question our current "dull" practices."
